THE CHI-RHO SYMBOL The Origin of the Symbol The Chirho, also known as Chrismon, is one of the oldest christograms, consisting of the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, ΧΡIΣΤΟΣ (Christos) or Chi (Χ), and Rho. (P). This symbol has deep historical and religious significance, dating back to the early Christian church. The historical background of the Chi-Rho symbol The symbol was first used by early Christians as a monogram to represent Jesus Christ, serving as a secret sign among believers during a time when Christianity was still emerging and often persecuted, symbolizing hope and faith in Christ. The most famous association of it is with the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.
